Settlement Reached in Bicycle -- Dump Truck Crash

The family of a Seattle bicyclist killed by a dump truck have settled their wrongful death suit against the company that owns the truck. The amount of the settlement is undisclosed.

The accident occurred as the bicyclist was riding in a bike lane when the dump truck made a sudden right turn and struck the 19 year old. The driver of the dump truck, apparently unaware he hit the man, continued driving, dragging the man under the truck. The bicyclist ultimately died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The accident has created public outrage in the bicycling community, and prompted city leaders to enact more bike safety regulations.

Bridge Accident Leads to $19 Million Law Suit

The families of three men killed in a May 2007 accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge filed a lawsuit against eight defendants for $19 million. The accident was caused when a trailer broke away from an SUV and caused a chain reaction of collisions on the bridge.

Included in the lawsuit is the Maryland Transportation Authority, which had closed some of the lanes on the bridge with no barriers in between lanes.

The original cause of the crash, however, came from the SUV. The driver of the vehicle was towing a home-made trailer, which became unhitched and collided with another vehicle on the bridge. Ultimately, eight people were injured in the series of accidents, three of them fatally.
